TLDR;
I’ve spent over 20 years in software engineering working across many industries. While I really enjoy coding, I’ve discovered a greater passion for developing high-performing engineering organizations and the people within. My initial foray into management wasn’t the right fit, but returning to individual contributions clarified my priorities. I’m now focused on finding ways to contribute to organizational growth and the growth of my team members while still actively engaging in engineering solutions even though that doesn’t currently require creating code.
I have worked in eCommerce, health care, automotive and manufacturing. Most of these have been SaaS enterprises and I have enjoyed my time in each of them. Here are some of the highlights of the last decade or so.
Syncro – Senior Manager
- Manager of managers
- Led the introduction of our first AI features
- Manage and develop near-shore resources
- Drove significant architectural changes throughout the organization to improve the reliability and extensibility of the systems
- Promote engineering excellence as a standard organizational trait
Syncro – Manager
- Led the migration from a multi-cloud environment to a single-cloud platform
- transferred from my team due to new priorities
- Led effort to evolve off of Heroku onto AWS and K8s
- transferred from my team due to new priorities
- Designed and implemented a comprehensive training system that increased employee engagement and improved overall team performance. (ask me, I am really proud of this one)
- Successfully managed and mentored 3 cross-functional teams with up to 20 members
- Streamlined the QA operational process, resulting in more visibility into work status and significantly faster feedback loops for developers.
NOTE: I have played a key role in navigating organizational changes, including shifts in leadership, strategic direction, and operational processes. My contributions have consistently demonstrated a significant impact, and my current responsibilities and level of influence are comparable to Director or Vice President roles in other organizations..
Seamgen – Lead Engineer
This was an agency that built small engineering teams as a service. I led two projects.
RegenMed
This project entailed the development of a comprehensive survey and analytics platform. The system facilitated patient data collection, enabling clinicians to effectively track and analyze patient health outcomes and optimize treatment strategies.
We developed a dynamic and highly customizable survey generator utilizing .NET Core, SQL Server, and React. This event-driven system was deployed on AWS ECS, enabling the creation of tailored surveys for diverse needs.
ActiveHealth
We undertook a modernization project to revitalize Aetna’s ActiveHealth application. This involved migrating the legacy ASP.NET application to a modern React framework. The project presented a unique blend of challenges and rewards, offering the opportunity to both leverage modern development practices and ensure a smooth transition for the application’s users.
GovX – Senior Engineer
GovX was an e-commerce platform offering exclusive discounts to first responders and government personnel. The application was architected using Domain-Driven Design (DDD) and comprised of multiple distributed services.
I contributed to various aspects of the application, culminating in the development of an event data ingestion pipeline. This was a challenging undertaking, as event data from sources like TicketMaster often arrives in inconsistent formats.
To address this, I implemented a robust pipe-and-filter architecture. This approach allowed for the sequential processing of event data through a series of stages, ensuring data consistency and reliability before it was integrated into the core application.
These systems were developed in .NET Core, SQL Server and React.
AutoAnything (AutoZone) – Manager
I joined the company as a Lead Engineer, managing a small team of approximately four engineers. Over the eight years, I have actively participated in a wide range of projects and initiatives, contributing significantly to the company’s growth. Here are some of them:
- Introduced and implemented new architectural techniques and development practices, significantly improving organizational efficiency and accelerating development cycles
- Successfully scaled the engineering team from 4 to 11 members, while maintaining high productivity and team cohesion
- Represented AutoAnything’s architecture during a rigorous Deloitte audit conducted as part of the AutoZone due diligence process.
- Collaborated effectively across departments to enhance their capabilities by strategically leveraging engineering resources.
I have many other accomplishments, but I believe these highlights best demonstrate my most recent contributions.
